The following information is intended to provide you, as local government elected and non-elected officials, information designed to mitigate the impact of the potential levee decertification on your community, to help you understand the issues and enable you to better inform your constituents. We hope that it will serve as a valuable resource and we welcome your suggestions as to what other information will be of assistance.

Critical to this process is understanding why the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) would decertify the levees currently protecting your community from flooding. Check our Background section to learn more about this process. Also we know how confusing the flood insurance issue can be. See the Flood Insurance page for information that should clarify the situation for you and your constituents.

A clear understanding of the impact upon your community in general, and your constituents in particular, is needed to ensure your residents are fully informed on how flooding may affect them. See FAQs or Frequently Asked Questions for helpful information.

On the Resources page, you will find links to many resources that you and your community members may find helpful. We have also included downloadable files on these pages designed for you, your staff and other elected officials.

You can also visit and refer your constituents to the Residents and Small Business page and Expanding Business and Developers page for information and downloads designed to answer their questions directly.

We can't prevent flooding from occurring but we do have the ability to mitigate the damages of flooding to our communities. Understanding the issue is the first step toward solving the problem.
