This section will provide an explanation and information about recent reports regarding decertification of the levees by theFederal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), how the government officials throughout the region are working to get the levees repaired and the impact of these decisions on you, your familiy, your business and your employees. The regional goal is to get the levees repaired as quickly as possible so that we will all be safe and our investments protected.
As homeowners, business owners and renters, we all need to know that we can take steps to protect our property and financial investments before disasters happen. A result of FEMA’s actions may be a requirement that many residents and businesses in the American Bottoms obtain flood insurance.
Flood insurance is a very important aspect of being responsible for your property. Your home provides you and your family shelter and protection from the outside elements, so it is important that it is safe and your family is secure. For business owners, one of the most important responsibilities you have is protecting and insuring your financial investment, your livelihood and those you employ.
Though it will be financially difficult for some, it will be required so that when flooding happens, resources will be available to put your home and business back together. Unless you specifically carry flood insurance, your property/ homeowners/renters insurance does not cover flooding.
This website provides background on the issue, answers to many questions, what has been done to date, who is involved in the process, information on how to buy flood insurance, and how to be ready in case of an emergency. Although it will be several months until final FEMA action occurs, everyone needs to take the necessary steps now, the first of which is to educate ourselves on the process and what needs to be done. Although FEMA will not require the purchase of flood insurance for several more months, residents should protect themselves by purchasing flood insurance to cover a catastrophic loss. In addition, people who already have purchased annual flood insurance for the next year, before it is required, will have the benefit of preferred rates in the future.
This section also will contain downloadable fact sheets that can be printed and shared. We will be updating and adding resources to the site, so please let us know what items you would find useful as we move forward in our efforts to keep everyone informed.
